Legal Aid NSW is the largest legal aid agency in Australia, comprising of a Central Sydney office and 26 regional offices in metropolitan and regional centres across NSW and a number of specialist services and advice clinics. Working at Legal Aid NSW provides the opportunity to support people with disabilities, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, women and children, Indigenous people and people with mental illness who may experience difficulties when enforcing and defending their rights.


ABOUT THE ROLE


We are looking for committed undergraduate law students who are interested in undertaking a Legal Cadetship with Legal Aid NSW.

 

As part of the program, cadets will:

 

• Be employed as a temporary employee;
• Undertake full time study toward an undergraduate law degree;
• Undertake a paid work placement for a maximum of 60 days per year (12 weeks);
• Depending on operational requirements, undertake placements on either a part time (during semester) or full time (during semester break) basis;
• Receive a fortnightly study allowance during the period of the cadetship; and
• Undertake work placements in the areas of Criminal, Family or Civil law.

 

ABOUT YOU

 

The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic and hardworking law student who is willing to learn. As a Legal Cadet you will have the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in the Criminal, Family or Civil Divisions by: 
  • Assisting legal officers in conducting an effective legal practice

  • Undertaking file work and legal research

  • Working collaboratively with practice staff (legal officers and administrative staff)

  • Complying with the Legal Aid Commission Act, policies and practice management standards      

 

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently undertaking full time study toward a law degree (and be able to provide a confirmation of enrolment and transcripts).

     
    Willingness to undertake a Criminal Record Check and/or working with Children Check

     


This vacancy is an identified Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander recruitment under Part 5, clause 26 of the Government Sector Employment (General) Rules 2014 and these placements are for persons who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
