The Position

ANU has an international reputation for research and education in biology including biological data science. This is achieved through discovery research, applied research, research-led teaching, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. The Research School Biology (RSB) in conjunction with the Biological Data Science Institute (BDSI) is now searching for Bioinformatics IT Support Officer to enhance their training and research capabilities at all levels.

The Bioinformatics IT Support Officer provides high quality support and training delivered across RSB's and BDSI's Higher Degree Research (HDR) programs, research training courses and projects. The position includes 20% blue sky research component at the support officers discretion. The position will be tightly integrated within the vibrant research and teaching programs available at RSB and BDSI. The officer will benefit from a collective desire to improve bioinformatic and data proficiency at all levels.

The position will maintain a close working relationship with students, academic and professional staff within the School, the College and the wider University.

The Person

To be successful in this role, you will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to build and maintain relationships in a culturally sensitive manner.

  • You will have the unique opportunity to shape bioinformatic training and data science skills at one of the world's leading research environments for a broad range of biological subject areas.
  • You will be a key point of contact for our students and staff through the development and delivery of bioinformatic, computing, data management and other related training course relevant for biology.
  • You will have 20% of your time to spend on your own blue sky research of your choosing.
  • You will be part of a highly interactive environment and have time to contribute to the larger global ecosystem of biological training initiative (e.g. [Software] Carpentry).

  • Work test of about 5 minutes on a training session at beginners level for linux, bash, R, python or another bioinformatic topic of the candidates choice. The candidate is requested to also explain the reasoning of their choice.
