About the Department
We ensure young children get the best start in life by supporting and regulating the early childhood education and care sector. We are the largest provider of public education in Australia with responsibility for delivering high-quality public education to two-thirds of the NSW student population.


About the role
The Aboriginal Education and Communities Directorate is responsible for strategic leadership, research and policy directions regarding Aboriginal education across the department, including NSW public schools. It also has a key accountability to building a whole of department commitment to improving the educational achievement of Aboriginal students. The directorate is also responsible to lead the bolstering of the strength, diversity, custodianship and richness of Aboriginal cultures for all students.


The Director, Premier’s Priority leads and manages a team to achieve the Premier’s Priority - Increase the proportion of Aboriginal students attaining Year 12 by 50 per cent by 2023, while maintaining their cultural identity in NSW public schools.


The Director identifies risks and barriers and manages and resolves complex and contentious issues to ensure the effective delivery of the priority.

Essential Requirements:

• Aboriginality
• Appropriate tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as education, business, management, social sciences or communications, and/or equivalent knowledge and experience.
• Capacity to lead staff in implementing the Department's Aboriginal Education Policy, the Partnership Agreement, Together we are Together we can; Maintaining a collaborative partnership into the future; 2010 - 2020 and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal students.
• Hold a valid clearance to work with Children (Working with Children Check).
