About the role

Situated in Blackburn, this role will supervise staff services to support people with disabilities, to enable access to a quality life with dignity, respect and social inclusion, in the least restrictive environment. As the successful applicant, you will be required to demonstrate strong leadership qualities, have experience in working in group homes, with individuals with high support needs and have strong knowledge of relevant legislation and excellent skills in communicating effectively with a diverse group of key stakeholders.

This role is for a fixed term period, commencing in March 2020 and ending in February 2021.

To be successful in this role you will have experience working in a complex location with varying behaviours and requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and plan support for people with disabilities, within their home and community, to participate in a range of life areas (including personal health and well-being, social, recreational and daily living activities) based on the goals of individual support plans
  • Advocate within the broader community on behalf of clients and their families, to support inclusion, participation and respect for rights
  • Convey information, to clients and their families, and other people in the lives of clients and participate in negotiations with family members, medical services, activity services and other community services to help meet daily client needs and/or plan support for future client requirements
  • Manage staff team and related services including but not restricted to, roster development, shift allocation, supervision etc

Qualifications

  • Certificate IV in Disability or equivalent Disability related qualification
  • Current Employee Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • Full driver’s licence
  • Level 2 First Aid Certificate

Skills & Experience

  • Client management skills:  Demonstrated ability to probe for the facts, liaise with stakeholders and analyse issues from different perspectives in order to identify and propose workable strategies to effectively support the well-being of the clients moving forward
  • Interpersonal skills: linking positive communication skills with the ability to empathise and consider the opinions ideas and views of others to establish a sound understanding of client’s needs and express personal views in a constructive, empathetic and diplomatic way
  • Environmental awareness: demonstrated ability to draw upon the knowledge and expertise of other stakeholders and professionals, to obtain their perspective and expertise and consult experts to gain broader and deeper understanding of a specific issue; seeks underlying reasons for a presenting issue
  • Self-management skills: ability to evidence sound planning and prioritisation to ensure positive outcomes are achieved – recognising individual strengths and areas for development to ensure consistency of service and suitability of actions
