Job Reference: 493296

Become a Mentor as part of LWB's Child Youth Family Program. Mentors are carefully matched to a child or young person through a range of areas, including personality, interests and hobbies, skill base, as well as matching to gender and location.

About the Organisation
Life Without Barriers is a leading social purpose, not for profit organisation of 7,300 employees working in more than 440 communities across Australia. We support children, young people and families, people with disability, older people and people with mental illness. We work with people who are homeless and refugees and asylum seekers.

We want to employ people who reflect the diversity of our clients to ensure we can support each client's individual needs and wants. We encourage people of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background and people with disability to apply.

About the Role
Life Without Barriers is looking for Mentors in the Northern suburbs of Adelaide to join our Therapeutic Foster Care program.

Within the Child, Youth and Family Program, mentors are seen as an important part of the care team that supports a child or young person in care. Mentors work with children and young people under the Guardianship of the Minister assisting them in a range of ways:

  • Modelling and establishing positive relationships with peers and adults.
  • Modelling appropriate behaviours in terms of interpersonal interaction, life skills, employment, education and leisure.
  • Providing pathways or linkages to increased opportunities with education, employment and community connections.
  • Accessing and facilitating recreational and sporting activities.

Mentors are carefully matched to a child or young person through a range of areas, including personality, interests and hobbies, skill bas, as well as matching to gender and location.

A mentor will develop a close and trusting relationship with the young person, and this relationship becomes a catalyst for change and growth. It is this relationship that can nurture a young person’s sense of self, helping them to develop the social skills required to create their own friendships and providing a positive influence in their journey through care.

Essential requirements:

  • A DHS Working with Children/Child-related Employment Screening clearance
  • Current First Aid certificate
  • Current Child Safe Environments certificate
  • A current driver’s licence and a reliable, roadworthy vehicle with insurance (other than CTP)
