ANU is a large, diverse employer with staff working across numerous professions (see the full list of available roles here. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and identities and from individuals who may have had a non-linear career path, career gaps or career breaks.

The Position

The successful candidate will become a member of the department of Materials Physics within Research School of Physics (RSPhys). The department is a host to the national computed micro-tomography laboratory (CTLab) as well as the ARC Training Centre for Multiscale 3D Imaging, Modelling and Manufacturing (M3D Innovation). CTLab has produced ground-breaking 3D X-ray microscopy technology for over 15 years. The group, comprising scientists, engineers, and research students, is characterised by mutual respect, an openness to new ideas and a willingness to take risks. M3D Innovation is built on the enabling technology of CTLab and provides new insights and quantitative analysis of form and function of 3D materials to industry partners with interests ranging from medical devices to timber, oil and gas, and additive manufacturing.

This is a key role that will focus on an M3D innovation project within the “Cultural Heritage” theme. Projects within this theme focus on micro-CT applications to palaeontology, and are undertaken as a partnership between ANU and The Australian Museum. The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to the objective to develop automated segmentation and classification of biostratigraphic signatures within CT volumes of rocks through machine learning and artificial intelligence (deep learning). This will be based on a training dataset (that has already been largely generated) of microfossils encased within palaeontological rock samples. It is hoped that the tools and pretrained neural networks developed on this pilot application project will then be generalised for more broad automated analysis of tomographic volumes generated at CTLab.

The Person

We are looking for an enthusiastic early researcher with qualifications in Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science, and is able to deliver high-quality research output in said areas, as well as demonstrates achievements in leading projects related to digital image processing/analysis or computer vision. The successful candidate should have experience in at least one and preferably several of the following areas: computer vision, image segmentation and/or feature extraction, pattern recognition and/or object classification, machine learning and/or deep learning and/or optimisation techniques.
