The Department of Planning & Environment is the lead NSW Government agency in planning for a growing NSW. The Department is going through an exciting period of organisational and operational change.

The Department’s vision – “Planning for growing NSW: inspiring strong communities, protecting our environment” – provides the benchmark for our partnership and leadership approach to engaging and working collaboratively with key State and Local Government, community and industry stakeholders to deliver better outcomes in the areas of planning, local government and the environment.

The Department’s two related agencies - the Office of Environment & Heritage and the Office of Local Government - support the conservation and protection of the environment and an effective local government sector in NSW. Several other entities associated with the Department include the Environment Protection Authority, statutory trusts responsible for zoos, parks and gardens, independent assessment and planning bodies, and development corporations.

Conservation and Regional Delivery Division provides integrated and customer focused services at the regional and local level to strengthen environmental conservation across NSW. This Division has responsibility for delivering state-wide conservation programs and includes services, programs and grants for threatened species, planning, including local and strategic planning, environmental water management, coast, estuary and floodplain management, community engagement, compliance and enforcement.
 
About the Role:
The South East Planning team assess the impacts of large and small developments on the lands biodiversity values, its threatened species and its Aboriginal cultural heritage values. We provide high quality technical advice aimed at reducing impacts on biodiversity to local council the Department of Planning and Environment, large and small developers and consultants. We also work with other landholders assisting them to manage the land for conservation values.  The role is wide and varied and requires understanding of the NSW Biodiversity Conservation legislation and the associated biodiversity method.  The position will be required to be able to liaise and communicate technical information regarding biodiversity conservation with local councils, landholders and the consultant and developer industry.
 
Primary purpose of the role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Conservation Planning Officer to provide advice to local and state government, proponents and the community on statutory and strategic planning matters and contribute to the NSW Government’s initiatives in relation to environmental planning, management and conservation.
 

  • This position would co-ordinate and provide advice to external stakeholders and management on strategic environmental planning matters to ensure optimal natural, environmental and Aboriginal cultural heritage conservation outcomes.
  • We are looking for a result focused team player to ensure that environmental assessment and strategic planning advice is consistent with NSW government policies and guidelines.
  • An ideal candidate will use project management skills to review and report as relevant on the environmental impacts, including biodiversity, sustainability and Aboriginal cultural heritage and ensure consistency of OEH comments on planning proposals.
 
Essential requirements:
  • Knowledge of and experience in the interpretation of legislation, and experience in dealing with environmental planning and assessment issues.
  • Experience in the assessment and analysis of strategic and complex conservation proposals.
  • Current Drivers Licence.
 
 
To be successful in the role, ideally you will have:
 
High level analytical skills are required. The ability to use Geographic information systems to analyse and create vegetation information is also highly valued. A Degree in Environmental Science, environmental planning or equivalent. An understanding of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and associated Biodiversity Assessment Method would be beneficial.
