Caring for our city, creating a future for all

Our people are passionate about their communities and connected to their teams. They’re motivated by our genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion, and our clear, compelling plan for our global city: Sustainable Sydney 2030 – 2050 Continuing the Vision.

Be part of a purpose-led organisation, with care at its core. You’ll make a difference by acting in the best interests of our communities and city. Be better together with collaborative and inclusive partnerships. Embrace possibilities and be open to new ideas and creating bold solutions.

If you are looking for challenging work as a Building Surveyor on a large variety of projects within one of the best cities in the world, here is your opportunity.

The City of Sydney is seeking a suitably experienced and tertiary qualified professional to join our Health and Building Unit. You will be investigating building and development related compliances, participating in the backpackers and boarding house inspection program and inspecting pool barriers to ensure compliance.

Our Health & Building Team offers a very friendly and helpful working environment, which supports all of its staff members through in-house professional development and assistance, whilst recognising the importance of a balance between work and lifestyle commitments.

To be successful you will have:

  • tertiary qualification such as but not limited to a TAFE Diploma or Undergraduate Degree in building, building science, building surveying, engineering, planning, architecture, construction management or similar
  • demonstrated experience in development compliance work and/or building surveying
  • sound understanding of building construction methods and materials suitable for residential and commercial buildings and structures
  • working knowledge of the National Construction Code of Australia
  • sound knowledge of state building legislation and regulatory requirements for all classes of buildings and structures
  • well-developed understanding of essential fire safety measures within buildings.

Previous experience in building certification or National Construction Code consultancy will be an advantage.

If you meet the criteria and have the required experience, then we want to hear from you.

At the City of Sydney you’ll join a dedicated team where individual effort is part of something much bigger – creating great things for our city’s dynamic future.

To apply: Upload your resume and respond to the application questions to show how you meet the role’s requirements. Select 'Apply' to complete your online application.

The successful applicant is required to complete a pre-employment health declaration, pre-employment medical examination and national criminal check.

Applications must be submitted online by 11.59pm on Wednesday 1 May 2024.

For further information contact: Kurtis Boys, Area Manager on 02 9265 9944.

A challenging and rewarding career: Why joining the City of Sydney might be the right move for you.

We offer a teams-based approach to flexibility. Our flexible working benefits include 26 week parental leave, paid partner leave of 6 weeks and paid super for up to 52 weeks of parental leave. You’ll have the opportunity to work a 19-day month with flexible working options.

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and celebrate a workplace as diverse as our communities. We’re passionate about gender balance in the workplace, with an executive team that is two-thirds female and 50% of our leadership roles held by women.

We encourage all applicants, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, and people of diverse sexualities and genders to join us.

We’re a disability confident recruiter. If you identify as a person with disability and require adjustments or support for your application and throughout the recruitment process contact the Recruitment Team recruitment@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au or 02 9265 9333.
