Aboriginal Casework Manager

Job Reference: 135544925

Aboriginal Casework Manager
Clerk Grade 9
Department of Communities and Justice
Ongoing full-time role – Charlestown

Do you identify as Aboriginal and are looking for a great career opportunity?

Are you passionate about improving the life chances of children and helping families to live happy and fulfilling lives?

We are looking for a dedicated practitioner to join The Hunter Aboriginal Cultural Hub at Charlestown

About us

The Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) directly supports approximately 800,000 people every year and reaches a further million people through local community-based programs.

Our vision is to empower people to live fulfilling lives and achieve their potential in inclusive communities. We collaborate with government, non-government and community partners to work with children, adults, families and communities to improve lives and realise their potential, with a focus on breaking, rather than managing, disadvantage.

The Hunter Aboriginal Cultural Hub compromises of 8 caseworkers who support and strengthen practice working with Aboriginal families across the Hunter district by working both directly with families and / or district caseworkers to:

  1. Keep our kids at home (pre-natal work, working to preserve family, assessing safety and risk and supporting them with the goals agreed to in the Family Action Plan, working actively and purposefully and in partnership with the family to keep children safe at home)
  2. Keep our kids connected (working to help kids thrive through meaningful cultural plans, family connection work, supporting kinship placements, and reuniting separated siblings)
  3. Get our kids home (restoring children to family by supporting them with the goals agreed to in the Family action plan, and working actively, purposefully and in partnership with families)

About the role

In this challenging yet rewarding role, you will lead and supervise a team of eight (8) Aboriginal caseworkers and work in collaboration with stakeholders to improve family functioning by providing services to vulnerable children, young people, and families.

You will ensure that  the work of the Cultural Hub aligns to the ‘Family is Culture’ (2019) recommendations and the NSW Practice Framework supporting culturally reflective practice and create respectful partnerships with both families and communities and  keeping culture and children’s safety at the centre of all our work.

The District is committed to addressing the overrepresentation of Aboriginal children in OOHC and aims to support more Aboriginal children to experience safety in their homes and grow up within their own Community, or a culturally appropriate placement. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting these commitments

This is an ongoing role in accordance with the Government Sector Employment Act 2013.

A Recruitment Pool will be created to fill similar roles for both ongoing and temporary opportunities in Hunter/Central Coast if and as they arise.
