If you enjoy working outdoors and want to make a difference in the community, a role in our Mitigation Crews could be for you! 

We are looking for motivated and community-minded individuals who have a passion for emergency services and enjoy working in an outdoor-based physical role. By joining our Mitigation Crews, you will have the opportunity to reduce the risk of fires occurring within your community. You will have the opportunity to assist with the AIDER Program, hazard reduction activities, and support operations during emergency response.

This opportunity offers:

  • Full-time ongoing employment & 35 hours per week 
  • Attractive annual salary:
    • Mitigation Crew Member: $63,204 ? $67,906 p.a. plus 11% superannuation
    • Mitigation Crew Leader: $71,648 - $77,889 p.a. plus 11% superannuation
  • Mandatory paid 5-week induction program upon commencement (may be required to travel and stay at the training facility over the period)

What you?ll need to join our crews:

­­Mitigation Crew Member entry requirements include:

  • A current Driver Licence, Class Provisional P1 or above


The RFS will support you to obtain the following qualifications during the Mitigation Crew Induction Program:

  • RFS Bush Firefighter (BF) Qualification
  • First Aid Qualification


Mitigation Crew Leader
entry requirements include:

  • RFS Crew Leader (CLW and/or CLS) Certification or its equivalent
  • A current Class Medium Rigid (MR) Driver Licence

    • Assessment Centres: Late May 2024
    • Medical Assessments: Late May ? Mid June 2024
    • Physical Assessments: Mid - Late June 2024
    • Offers of Employment: Mid July 2024
    • Mandatory Induction: From Late July 2024
  • Shortlisted applicants will be required to undergo a medical assessment through the RFS-approved medical provider (medical costs will be covered by the RFS). Check out the Medical & Physical Assessment Information Guide
  • You should commence training for the physical assessment as soon as possible. To prepare for the physical assessment, please follow the Arduous Pack Test Training Plan and Kinetic Assessment Task Information Sheet.
  • The recruitment process may involve a range of assessment activities to determine your capabilities for the role (aligning with the NSW PSC Capability Framework). The Mitigation Crew Member & Crew Leader Capability Guides are designed to help job applicants understand and use this framework.
